Executive Director Letter
To Friends of Oklahoma City Golf:
I would like to welcome you to a new beginning for GOLF, Inc. GOLF, Inc. was formed in 1959 by several prominent local leaders as a not-for-profit
organization dedicated to the improvement and promotion of amateur golf in the greater Oklahoma City area with an emphasis on junior golf.
The stated purpose of the organization is:
- to provide instruction and training for children to develop their capabilities and attitudes of good sportsmanship;
- to establish and promote a scholarship program for college students interested in sporting activities;
- to assist and help young people to know the rules of the game of golf and encourage their participation in sporting activities so that they will engage in activities conducive to making them better citizens during their spare time, thereby teaching them the attributes of good moral character; and
- to encourage, develop and promote fair play and sportsmanship, and to instill in the public appreciation of competitive athletics by sponsoring, encouraging, and presenting athletic contests, exhibitions and tournaments.
For years, Oklahoma City proclaimed that it had one of the top junior programs anywhere. This was recognized in the Spring of 1993 when Golf
Digest, a nationally known golf publication, cited our program and GOLF, Inc. as the Number 1 municipality in the United States for its
promotion of amateur golf and its junior program. During this time, GOLF, Inc. prided itself that over 1,000 youngsters took part in the
junior golf program each year through the supervised play days, a series of tournaments and free instruction from the professionals at
the member golf courses.
GOLF, Inc. is funded almost wholly by our amateur golfers through membership, tournament participation and donations. The organization remains a volunteer organization with many devoting their time and efforts to help local golf and those participating in the organization.
Over the past ten years, GOLF, Inc. has seen a decline in interest and participation. To address the issues faced in this changing atmosphere, GOLF, Inc. has had a change in leadership. Brandon Alford, the dynamic Director of Golf at James E. Stewart Golf Course has taken over the junior golf program. 2016 will see a dramatic change in the junior golf program, designed to increase interest and participation in the program. GOLF, Inc. will also be hosting more and better tournaments to include events for men, women, and seniors in addition to the junior golf schedule.
GOLF, Inc. currently has 5 young women and men on scholarship. We are engaging in a fund raising campaign to increase the number on scholarship. Past scholarship recipients include 3 time U.S. Women’s Open champion, Susie Maxwell Berning, Mayor Mick Cornett, Hugh Edgmon, former President of Oak Tree National, and Robin Freeman, PGA Tour Member, among numerous other civic leaders and recognized successful individuals.
It is my honor and pleasure as the new Executive Director of GOLF, Inc. to invite each and every one of you to participate in the restoration of GOLF, Inc. to its former status and to serve the golf community and youth of Oklahoma City.
James M. Reid
